14 Days of Metallica: Day 8

Day 8 goes to what turned out to be one of the few love songs from the band; Nothing Else Matters

Betcha didn't know that did you? Hit the jump for the story behind it.

This was one of the first songs I learned on guitar.  Well, at least the intro.  I remember being very young and picking it up and playing the open strings, and realizing that it was the intro to this song.  I later learned more, but never the full song.  Hetfield wrote the song while on the phone with his girlfriend, and only had one hand free, hence the open E arpeggiation.  The lyrics, "So close, no matter how far", was about their bond despite the distance while Hetfield was on tour.

Originally it wasn't set to be released as Hetfield wrote it for himself, but after Lars heard it, it was considered for the album. Later, the song was dedicated to the fans.  Favorite part; first note of the solo.  Feels like there is so much emotion in that one note.  Heartbreak, ecstacy and everything in between.
